Iced Matcha Latte: The Simple Cold Method

An iced matcha latte needs four things: 2g of matcha, a splash of hot water, a glass of ice and about 150ml of cold milk. You whisk the matcha into a smooth paste first, pour it over the ice, top it up with milk and stir. The whole drink takes about three minutes, and it costs a fraction of what a café charges.

The method matters more than the ingredients. Most iced matcha lattes that go wrong are either watery, clumpy or bitter, and all three problems trace back to the same few steps. This guide fixes them one by one.

How do you make an iced matcha latte?

Start with the paste. Sift 2g of matcha into a small bowl, add about 30ml of water at 80 degrees, and whisk briskly in a W-motion for 20 to 30 seconds until it is completely smooth. Hot water is still the right choice for an iced drink, because matcha dissolves much better in warm water than in cold.

Then build the glass. Fill it generously with ice, pour the matcha paste over the cubes, and add about 150ml of cold milk. Stir gently and you are done. The green layer floating into the milk looks great, so pour slowly if you want the layered effect for a moment before you stir.

Why does my iced matcha taste watery?

Melting ice is the usual reason. A hot paste poured over a small amount of ice melts it quickly, and all that meltwater thins the drink. Two things help: use plenty of ice, because a full glass melts slower than a few lonely cubes, and let the paste cool for a minute before you pour it. Some people whisk a small splash of cold water into the paste first, which does the same job.

If the taste is still thin, the fix is simpler: use the full 2g of matcha. A level bamboo scoop or a kitchen scale keeps it consistent.

What milk works best cold?

Oat milk is the favourite for iced matcha, because its natural sweetness rounds off the grassy notes without any added sugar. Regular dairy milk works well and tastes a little cleaner, while almond milk keeps the drink light and lets the matcha colour shine through. There is no wrong answer here, so use what you already like.

One tip for pre-sweetened cartons: taste before you add anything. Many oat and almond milks already carry enough sweetness for the whole drink.

Can you make it without a whisk?

Yes, and the shaker method is actually great for iced drinks. Put 2g of matcha and about 50ml of cool water in a jar or shaker bottle, close it tightly and shake hard for 20 to 30 seconds. Pour it over ice, add milk and stir. The shake creates a nice foam and there are no clumps, as long as the lid is on properly.

Do you need syrup or sugar?

With good ceremonial matcha, usually not. The natural sweetness that comes from shade growing does the work that syrup does in a café drink made with cheaper powder. If you do like it sweeter, add a little honey or maple syrup to the warm paste before it goes over the ice, because sweeteners dissolve poorly in cold liquid.

FAQ

How much matcha goes in an iced latte?
2g, the same as a hot latte or a traditional bowl. That is one level bamboo scoop.

Can I make it the night before?
You can whisk the paste ahead and keep it covered in the fridge for a day, then shake or stir it before building the glass. The drink itself is best fresh, because matcha slowly settles and separates.

Why does my iced matcha clump?
The powder went into cold liquid directly. Always whisk it with a small amount of warm water first, or use the shaker method, and the clumps disappear.

Is iced matcha weaker than hot matcha?
The matcha amount is the same, so the strength mostly depends on how much the ice melts. Plenty of ice and a cooled paste keep the flavour full.

The better the powder, the less you need to add. Try our 30g ceremonial matcha from Uji, naturally sweet enough to skip the syrup.
